Toolbox Tuesday

Youth-Driven Urban Planning

Post

Join an engaging Toolbox Tuesday, featuring the Y-PLAN (Youth – Plan, Learn, Act Now) engagement strategy led by Dr. Deborah McKoy, executive director and founder of the Center for Cities + Schools (CC+S) at the University of California, Berkeley, and Dr. Shirl Buss, creative director of CC+S and head of Y-PLAN Elementary. In this Toolbox Tuesday session, participants will learn about youth engagement and advocacy through Y-PLAN, a strategy that engages younger individuals within a community context to encourage them to learn and become more involved in city planning and policymaking.

Y-PLAN educators and planners leading this work for nearly two decades will share a youth- and child-driven model of city planning and social change, showcasing three examples of Y-PLAN in action in three Bay Area cities: Oakland, San Francisco and San Rafael. Planning topics will range from youth homelessness to resilience and engaging elementary school students in the 2040 General Plan. Participants will be able to sample the strategy in a Y-PLAN Mini Session.
