Planning For Main Streets

The Planning for Main Streets project is a regional effort led by SCAG to reimagine state highway corridors that double as community main streets. The project focuses on four corridors—State Route (SR) 1 in Los Angeles County, SR-18 in San Bernardino County, SR-86 in Orange County, and SR-39 in  Imperial County—and aims to transform these roads into people-centered places that balance transportation needs with community well-being.

Each corridor project will culminate with a study expected for publication in 2027 that will include:

  • Conceptual designs showing how streets could be reconfigured to improve safety, access, and placemaking.
  • Visual renderings and summaries that make proposed improvements easy to understand.
  • Grant-ready materials with cost estimates and funding strategies.
  • A summary of the process, findings, and recommendations for each corridor.

The two-year study development process began community engagement in fall of 2025, including walk audits and surveys circulated to stakeholders, community-based organizations, and others in each study corridor. The survey collected feedback on current travel behavior, concerns, and opportunities along each corridor. Feedback informed an “Existing Conditions Report” published by SCAG in February 2026.

In April and May, SCAG will host online workshops to introduce the local projects, review existing conditions, and gather additional community input. Feedback will help inform corridor priorities and recommendations to improve safety, mobility, and placemaking. While each workshop format is the same, the content will reflect the respective corridor. Register online using the following links to attend one or more workshops.

Workshop Dates

Each workshop will be held from 6-7 p.m.

Additional community engagement will include pop-up events (e.g., interactive sessions using demonstrations and augmented reality tools to test and visualize potential street improvements) and community and technical advisory committees.

For more information on additional engagement opportunities, the project timeline, study areas, and scope of work, visit SCAG’s Planning for Main Streets website.
